Ramapo College is a public liberal arts and professional studies institution of the New Jersey system of higher education, and it is located in Mahwah, which is a township in Bergen County, NJ, with a population of over 24 000, as estimated during the 2000 census. The township's name derives from the Lenni Lenape word `mawewi`, which means `Meeting Place` or `Place Where Paths Meet`.
Ramapo was established in 1969, as a state-supported, co-educational, four-year College of liberal arts, sciences, and professional studies. It currently offers its students more than 700 courses and 40 academic programs, including bachelor's degrees, Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (MALS), Master of Arts in Sustainability Studies (MASS), Master of Science in Educational Technology, and a Master's of Science in Nursing, plus several other programs, in areas such as medicine, chemistry and physical therapy.
Ramapo's athletic teams are known as the Roadrunners and they compete in NCAA Division III, with 8 men's and 12 women's teams. Their distinctive colors are maroon and white.
